Over the Seas

The oceans swell
As tears become saltier with loss
And bodies crash behind wintry doors
Groping for any familiar textures of humanity
That these foreign lands begin to recall
For mothers and fathers who abandon understanding
Just to smell the soil of a better life.

  1. Oh my Unathi, I was busy saying that I did not envision the poem’s weight but it is one of those that reminds us to pray. A certain kind of a Monday it was. Dear Monday. Anyhow, I hope that you are well. Thank you for visiting. 🙂

  2. Powerfully conveyed – the tragedy that is this refugee exodus.

“oceans” – fantastic – captures the fact that the traffic is not just from one source and one continent
“abandon understanding” – the folly and senselessness of the whole endeavour
“wintry doors” – the hostile, indifferent and frosty reception .
smell of better life? DAT NA BIG KWESHON as we say in pidgin English!

    Great poem, sad though.
